Funding

Since April 2007, the Partnership has been funded by means of grant from the Scottish Government, payable through the Scottish Safety Camera Programme, a personal injury crash/casualty reduction initiative sponsored by the Justice Department. This grant aid enables the individual partner bodies within the Partnership to recover their budgeted costs incurred in operating the safety camera service. The purpose of safety cameras is to deter speeding or red light running - there is no link between the number of offenders paying fines and the funding of the Partnership. All fines resulting from offences detected by safety cameras are paid through the Scottish Court Service as with any fine for any other offence.

There are strict rules which apply to all partnerships operating within the Scottish Safety Camera Programme. These rules ensure that cameras are targeted at the areas of greatest need in terms of casualty reduction and partnerships must also meet stringent operational requirements in terms of visibility, conspicuity and signage.

However, these rules and guidelines are only for the administrative purposes of operating safety camera partnerships. They have no legal status in relation to the prosecution of speeding or red light running offences and are not relevant in a court of law.
