Dont be an amber gambler
Don’t be an amber gambler!
A radio campaign aimed at highlighting the dangers of disobeying traffic signals will be running on Real Radio throughout the month of February 2010.
157 people were injured in the West of Scotland during 2008 as a result of drivers going through red lights. This campaign which is being run jointly with Lothian & Borders Safety Camera Partnership focuses on the decision a driver makes when faced with an amber light – to stop or to speed up.
The Highway Code says that the driver should stop unless they are so close to the light that to pull up might cause an accident. Racing the lights is not a good idea – it means that if an impact takes place, the resulting damage and injury is much worse.
Anticipation is the key to safe driving – if a signal has been on green for some time an approaching driver knows that it is likely to change and should be prepared for the amber light and then coming to a safe stop.
