ACTION ON SPEEDING IN RUTHERGLEN

Speeding drivers on Mill Street in Rutherglen are being warned to slow down or face the penalties in a bid to reduce the number of injuries on that road.  53 people have been injured in collisions on Mill Street since 2000 and speed has been recognised as a significant factor in these crashes.

Sergeant Colin Pearson of the Strathclyde Safety Camera Partnership said:  “Mill Street has been an approved mobile safety camera site since 2004 but enforcement has been curtailed due to a number of issues including restricted parking being available for the mobile camera van.  During this period, vehicle activated signs were installed which tell drivers directly when they are going too fast.

“Despite these signs, there are still many drivers totally ignoring the 30mph limit.  Speed enforcement by mobile safety camera is now to be stepped up to reinforce the message that speeding offenders will be penalised. A new traffic regulation order has been put in place and the road in Sheriff Park Avenue has been clearly marked to accommodate the enforcement vehicle.

Councillor Billy McCaig, Chair of South Lanarkshire Council’s Road Safety Forum commented:  “Mill Street has an unacceptably high record of crashes involving personal injury.  We had hoped that the interactive signs would persuade speeders to slow down voluntarily but it is clear that enforcement is still necessary.  The important thing to remember is that no one needs to get a speeding ticket, we would far rather that everyone just paid more care and stayed within the limit.”
