Cameras Maintain Speed Reduction on A77

Six months on from the installation of the SPECS average speed camera system on the A77 in South Ayrshire, figures show that the early success in reducing the number of speeders on the road is continuing.

Figures just released by the Strathclyde Safety Camera Partnership show that speeds generally are still down and there have been just 28 speeding offenders detected by camera during the months of November, December and January.

Speaking on behalf of the Partnership, Neil Macgillivray, commented: “We are very pleased that the initial drop in excessive speeds since the launch in July has been maintained. Drivers have taken the message on board and there have been only 49 offenders in the first six months of operation.

“We have also had supportive comments from local motorists who travel the A77 regularly, saying that it is now more pleasant to drive on the road without being pushed on by rushing drivers.”

Inspector Gordon Fulton of Strathclyde Police, commented: “Throughout the 32 miles, drivers appear to be conforming to the statutory speed limits. Although too early to make an assessment in relation to casualty statistics, initial effects look encouraging.”
