Road safety postcards for foreign drivers
In a new road safety drive for the 2007 tourist season, Strathclyde Safety Camera Partnership has produced free postcards to help keep foreign drivers safe and legal on Ayrshire and Argyll & Bute roads.
The postcards show scenic views on one side and a number of essential tips for safe driving on the other. The pictures show the Rest & be Thankful and Girvan looking towards Ailsa Craig
Partnership manager, Gladys Cadden, said: “We all know that driving in a different country can be a bit stressful and confusing. These cards are intended to give foreign drivers an easy-to-read reminder of important information about driving on our roads. As far as possible we have used symbols to assist those with a limited understanding of English.”
The Safety Camera Partnership initiative is being supported by VisitScotland, Argyll and Bute Council, South Ayrshire Council and Strathclyde Police.
Councillor Duncan MacIntyre, Transport and Infrastructure spokesperson for Argyll and Bute Council, said: “Many thousands of visitors from other countries travel on Argyll roads every year to experience our magnificent scenery and the many other attractions we have on offer. Safety on these roads is a crucial issue for everyone and we believe it is important to encourage foreign drivers to keep some basic points in mind as they make the most of their holiday. As the card says: ‘Relax, take care and enjoy your drive’.”
Annique Armstrong, Business Relationship and Marketing Manager with VisitScotland in Ayrshire, commented: “Our aim is to do all we can to ensure that a visit to Scotland is as memorable, safe and enjoyable as possible. We are delighted to support such a helpful initiative in this area.”
Every year in these popular areas for foreign visitors, the police and the other emergency services are called on to attend road crashes involving tourists. Chief Inspector Jim Igoe, the area commander for road policing, advised: “Unfortunately, the best of holidays are sometimes marred by tragedy and we therefore urge visiting motorists to think about their driving and take away only happy memories.”
The cards will be on display in over 180 locations throughout Ayrshire such as Tourist Information Centres, hotels, guesthouses, caravan parks and visitor attractions. In Argyll & Bute they will be distributed through the 14 Tourist Information Centres in the area.
