Safety Camera to Tackle Speeders in Motherwell

Safety Camera to Tackle Speeders in Motherwell

From early February 2006, a fixed speed enforcement camera will be operating on Shields Road, Motherwell, near Dollar Park, to slow down traffic on this busy road. Between 2001 and 2004 there were 8 personal injury crashes in that area, six of which involved serious injuries.

The camera has been introduced as a result of consultation with traffic management police and the roads department at North Lanarkshire Council, in an effort to reduce crashes and casualties. The speed limit for the road is 30 mph.

Sergeant Colin Pearson of the Strathclyde Safety Camera Partnership, which operates the camera, commented: “Speeding is recognised as a serious road safety problem on Shields Road.

“The purpose of the camera is to not to catch drivers speeding but to deter them from driving too fast in the first place. The camera is clearly visible for everyone to see and will warn drivers to curtail their speed in this area.”

David McDove, Traffic and Transportation Team Leader with North Lanarkshire Council, said: Speed cameras have already made a difference to the level of accidents within the North Lanarkshire area. And the more we install, the safer our roads become.

“We’re delighted at the continuing success of this partnership, and look forward to continuing to work with Strathclyde Police to make North Lanarkshire’s roads among the safest in Scotland.”
