NEW CAMERAS TO TACKLE RED LIGHT RUNNING AND SPEEDING ON CITY’S STREETS

A new generation of safety cameras is currently being installed on roads in Glasgow.  These cameras are digital replacements for existing ‘red-light’ cameras that have been operating in the city for a number of years.

The cameras are run by the Strathclyde Safety Camera Partnership, whose manager, Gladys Cadden, commented: “We have a number of cameras monitoring traffic signals around the city and their wet-film technology is now becoming outdated.  There is a significant difference with the 13 digital replacement cameras in that they will also have the ability to detect speeding vehicles. This is a major advance for road safety as it addresses the problem of drivers speeding up to beat the lights as well as those going through the signal. Clearly, the faster a vehicle is travelling, the more severe the impact in any resulting collision. ”

Chief Inspector Stewart Carle of Strathclyde Police commented:  “Red-light running is a road safety issue of real concern in the West of Scotland.  In 2008, 157 people were injured in the Strathclyde Police area because of drivers going through a red light. 89 of these injuries occurred within Glasgow.  With the new cameras in place the message for drivers is clear – don’t go through the red light and don’t try to race it. Although these cameras are only enforcing at particular problem locations in the city, the same principle applies at all traffic signals whether there are cameras or not.”

Bailie James McNally, Glasgow City Council’s Executive Member for Land and Environmental Services, said: “Traffic signals are there for a reason – to ensure the safe and steady flow of traffic on our city’s streets and roads.  Drivers who disregard red-lights put themselves and others in grave danger and I hope these new cameras will act as a deterrent to those who think they can get away with it”

The 13 new cameras are manufactured by RedSpeed International and will record offence images digitally for direct transmission to the safety camera partnership for the processing of offences.  The detection technology for both speed and red light offences is activated by vehicles travelling over sensors embedded in the road surface.
