Speeding drivers to be given a sign

Speeding drivers on Mearns Road, Newton Mearns and Kingston Road, Neilston are to be confronted with new interactive roadsigns that tell them they are travelling too fast.

The solar-powered devices, known as vehicle activated signs, are being installed on these roads as permanent reminder for drivers to heed their speed in areas that have a history of crashes and casualties in recent years. They are being installed by East Renfrewshire Council with the assistance of the Strathclyde Safety Camera Partnership.

Gladys Cadden of the Strathclyde Safety Camera Partnership commented: Because of their accident record, these locations are already sites for periodic speed enforcement by safety camera vehicles and this activity will continue. However, the new smart signs will operate at all times to get the message across to drivers who speed that they need to slow down. Both are within 30mph limits.

The face of the sign is plain black unless it detects a speeding vehicle when it will light up to show the speed limit and warn the driver to slow down. We hope that motorists will pay heed in the interests of every road user’s safety. For drivers who persist in speeding we will still have the mobile cameras in use.

Councillor Alan Lafferty, East Renfrewshire Council’s environment convener said: The Council takes road safety very seriously. We are pleased to work with the Partnership to flag up the importance of keeping within speed limits in what is a very clear and obvious way of putting over this vital message.
