Exploring Speed through Active Learning

Exploring Speed through Active Learning

Exploring Speed through Active Learning is a resource pack for primary teachers.  The pack contains a range of active learning opportunities linked to Curriculum for Excellence from Early to Second Level.

This section provides some links and materials to download that may be helpful in understanding road safety issues and the effects of speed. There are several categories of help on this website:

  • There are handy tables showing speed against distance travelled including the method used to calculate this.
  • There is information on road safety around the world, including the rising trends of child casualties in the poorest countries. Statistics from the Scottish Government also show that British roads had the lowest rate of fatalities per million of the population in 2009.
  • There are links to websites that will provide of relevant information on road safety.
  • There are downloadable files of Speeding Ted (cartoon and teddy) and the evaluation sheets (page 40 of the pack)

All downloadable resources are listed on the right hand side of the page.  Website links can be found in the Links section of this website:  http://www.strathclydecameras.com/Links/Other-Relevant-Websites/

New material added in July 2011:

We are grateful to Cathy Watson, a teacher in Saint Xavier's primary in East Ayrshire, who has taken our original pack materials and created a Cross curricular Forward Plan for the Early and First Level. The plan also incorporates assessment strategies and identifies links to other Road Safety materials. It makes links to how the four capacities of Curriculum are embedded in the materials and activities and includes ' I can ..' statements for children to be involved in recording their progress through the topic.  Cathy is happy to share this with others and her plan can be downloaded from the list of resources.
